Head of Palliative Care Unit's Message

Consultant Oncological Surgeon Dr. Chrysantha Perera

Palliative care has long remained a pressing need in Sri Lanka and is fast becoming a vital necessity that can no longer be overlooked in the Sri Lankan health care system. With the elderly population fast increasing due to rapid demographic transitions, Both the demand for and necessity of the service is also increasing on an almost daily basis.

Whilst this particular health care provisioning service is already at quite an advanced stage in many countries around the world, the Sri Lankan health care sector has not yet succeeded in providing adequate palliative care service to people suffering from incurable illnesses.

I have decided to take a lead role in this noble endeavor to provide palliative care services to patients suffering from incurable diseases and who are leading the last stages of their lives in abject misery. This, I believe, will not only help improve the quality of care for the patients but also assist their near and dear who would otherwise expend much energy , time and resources on caring for their incurably ill family members at great cost the themselves. I humbly invite you hereby to join hands with us in making this noble project a reality.

Our Services

Palliative care is a service which is mainly targeted at, taking care of the patients who are suffering from incurable diseases and also their families. The best thing about this service is that, it is committed to looking after the welfare of the families of those patients even after their death.

The most needed palliative care service has been initiated at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital by the leadership and the guidance of the Senior Oncological Surgeon, Doctor Chryshantha Perera in order to enhance the quality of the lives of the patients and their families.

Yet, there is no separate palliative care unit at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and there is a huge need of such a unit to treat the targeted patients. Thus, our society is now in action, in order to collect funds for this cause to enhance the quality and the efficiency of this service.

The palliative Care unit describes a service which is dedicated to caring for terminally-ill patients and their family members and to supporting the family members even after the demise of their loved one.

Since the enhancement of the quality of care and support offered to both terminally-ill patients and their families has been a pressing necessity, the Teaching Hospital,Karapitiya,Galle, has commenced a palliative Care Clinic under the leadership and guidance of Dr.Chrysantha Perera, oncological Surgeon of the Hospital. It has now been felt that this service needs to be further expanded and systematized for better service and, furthermore, that Palliative care for some terminally-ill patients can be best administered in a hospital environment. Therefore, steps have been taken to institute a Palliative Care Unit within the Karapitiya Hospital Premises. The Galle Branch of the SriLanka Cancer Society has joined hands with the Hospital and assumed a lead role in expediting this noble endeavor and are kindly appealing to charitable donors to come forward to assist us by contributing what they can in cash or kind.
